Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good afternoon. I’m so glad to be invited here, representing the Heinrich Boell Foundation, in the opening ceremony of the CESDRRC book and photo exhibition on “Deserts and Desertification Control”.

The Heinrich Boell Foundation is a legally autonomous and intellectually open political foundation. It is associated with the Green Party of Germany. The foundation carries the name of Heinrich Boell, the best-known writer and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Working with a large number of project partners, currently we are numbering over 200 projects in 60 countries. The Foundation aims to strengthen ecological and civil activism on a global level, in order to intensify the supra-regional exchange of ideas and experiences. Our activities are guided by the fundamental political values of ecology, democracy, solidarity, and non-violence.

In China, the Heinrich Boell Foundation is happy to cooperate with governmental departments, research institutes, colleges, NGOs, and think tanks in China and world-wide. In order to keep consistent with the developmental policy of China, our foremost task is protecting ecological environment and promoting civil consciousness. In addition, the Heinrich Boell Foundation supports legal dialogue, gender democracy, citizen participation and so on.

As a very important environmental, social, economical problem, desertification is puzzling the world, threatening the life and development of human being. Therefore, desertification control is a serious problem on ecological environment and sustainable development in the whole world. Since China is one of the countries having the most desertification region, desertification control is an urgent topic in China. Thus, we are very glad to cooperate with CESDRRC to accelerate the prevention and cure of desertification. We are also greatly indebted to them of this grand gathering, they have done excellent work.
